Born Melissa Viviane Jefferson on April 27, 1988, Lizzo is an American singer, rapper, songwriter, and flutist. She was born in Detroit, Michigan, but grew up in Houston, Texas. Her parents were both passionate music lovers, and Lizzo was exposed to a wide variety of music genres at a young age.

In her early teens, Lizzo formed a rap group called Cornrow Clique with her friends, and they would perform at various events and parties. She then went on to study classical flute performance at the University of Houston.
